Fertitta's Delicatessen, Shreveport's oldest continuously family-owned restaurant, was founded in 1927 by John Fulco as the Crystal Grocery and Rosebud Cafe. The establishment has operated in the same two story brick building since its founding. The original address was 1124 Howell Street, northeast corner with Christian Street, however, both street names have been changed and today the address is 1124 Fairfield Avenue, northeast corner with Sam R. Fertitta Drive.
Sam R. Fertitta Drive is named in honor of John Fulco's son-in-law, who took over operation of the business in 1949, later changing the name to Fertitta's Grocery and Italian Delicatessen. The late Sam Fertitta developed the restaurant's signature item: The Muffy®, a special version of the famous Louisiana-Sicilian muffaletta sandwich. The resaurant also serves other unique sandwiches as well as its other signature item, The Pronto Pizza(TM). In recent years Fertitta's focus has been on food service only, rather than the dual food service/grocery business of years past. Never the less, specialty items from meats and chesses to pastries and pastas are available for purchase in addition to menu items.
Since 1980 Fertitta's Delicatessen has been operated by Sam Fertitta's daughter, Agatha McCall who resides with her family above the restaurant just as her parents and grandparents did in years past. In 1997 Fertitta's was recognized by the City of Shreveport as a local landmark and in 1998 the restaurant was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historical markers denote both honors. Sam R. Fertitta Drive was formally dedicated by the City of Shreveport in March, 1999.
